The Risks of Getting a Tattoo
Despite the fact that most tattoos are done without a hitch, occasionally there are tattoo problems. It doesn”t matter how safe people tell you they are, you should still consider the risks before getting a tattoo. You may be told by some tattoo artists that the risks are nonexistent, this just isn’t so.
A crucial issue when getting a tattoo is whether the tattoo equipment is sanitary. The equipment must be cleaned and sterilized after every use or there is a high chance of getting a disease or infection. A serious skin disease can the the outcome of a dirty tattoo gun or equipment that hasn’t been cleaned properly. The studio should be sanitary too. A tattoo studio should be cleaned everyday as with a lot of clients it can become contaminated quite quickly.
If after you get your tattoo, you notice that the area is very red or swollen, seek medical help right away. You need to find out if the tattoo has become infected. Commonly a course of antibiotics is all that is needed to treat an infected tattoo. In a case of serious infection you could possibly be admitted to a hospital for further treatment. In a very severe case, to stop the infection spreading, the tattoo may need to be removed. Surgery to remove a tattoo has it’s own hazards.
When the recommendation is that the tattoo be removed, this process can be done as either inpatient or out patient surgery. Your doctors will decide if tattoo removal is the best option given your general health and the risks of the infection. Tattoo removal is usually safe and patients are given further treatment for the infection and the discomfort.
Health risks are a worry, but for most people it’s the look of the tattoo they are worried about. Your tattoo may not be correctly applied or might not look the way you want it too if it’s done by an amateur. You tattoo is going to be there for the rest of your life, so the the visual aspect of the tattoo is important. You will probably still be left with a scar even if you later decide to have the tattoo removed. Scars do fade and become less detectable as time goes by but they don’t go away, so you invariably have a reminder of where your tattoo once was.
In preparation for getting a tattoo you should look into the tattoo studio and make sure that it’s sanitary. Make certain they clean the tattoo equipment properly by asking as many questions as you need to and you feel confident that they clean properly. Hanging around the studio for some time is great way to see first hand how they work and how hygienic they are. A studio that is by and large clean and tidy, will be much less likely to use dirty tools.
Just as in other places of your life, there will be a judgment call. Getting a tattoo is not a decision you should not take lightly. You should know why you want it, be able to see yourself with the tattoo and be reasonably sure that your still going to like it later on in life. Make certain that you are getting a tattoo because you want, not just because it’s fashionable or some else suggested it, a tattoo is for life. Getting a tattoo just because your friends suggested it, is never right.
